| | Description: All boats are subject to water entering the bilge, the lowest point of the ship's hull. The most common source of leakage is from the boat's stuffing box. Stuffing boxes need routine maintenance to prevent damage to the propeller shaft. Depending on the stuffing box's condition and it's packing, the amount of water entering the bilge can vary from none to substantial. Examine the stuffing box daily before getting underway. Most properly tightened stuffing boxes will drip noticeably (more than 5 to 10 drops per minute) only when the shaft is turning. If you have excessive dripping & the gland nut is tight, it's time for new packing. When inspecting the stuffing box it should feel cool or just barely warm to the touch - indicating that the packing is not overheating. If it feels hot,... click here for more info
