Since classical times the red rose has been the most potent symbol of love. It all started when Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love, scratched herself on a white rose while rushing to help her lover Adonis and stained the petals with her blood. But it was the Victorians who first sent saucy messages, valentines day gifts and flowers on February 14th. Rob Cassy, author of The Ultimate Language of Flowers has helped us bring this Valentines day tradition up to date.

Valentines day – a day for lovers!
Valentines day is thought to be a celebration concocted by early Christian priests who were trying to resist the pagan feast of Lupercalia - a legacy of the Roman Empire which traditionally had a day's holiday to honour Juno, the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. As part of the celebrations, names of Roman maidens were placed in a box and drawn out by the young men. Each man accepted the girl whose name he drew as his love.
When, centuries later, the early Christians gave the celebration a makeover, they kept these popular bits – allowing young men to choose maidens for Valentines Day - but quietly dropped the rest. They named it Valentines day after a heroic priest called St Valentine who, in about the year 270, was famed for continuing to marry couples in secret in Rome in defiance of the Emperor of the time, cruel Claudius II. Unfortunately, St Valentine was caught and condemned to death on February 14th. That Valentines day, St Valentine became a Martyr to young Valentines day lovers everywhere. Even modern Valentines day traditions, such as the giving of Valentines day gifts and Valentines day flowers with romantic messages, dates back several hundred years. Originally, Valentines day gifts and Valentines day cards would have been hand-made and expensive, but the Industrial Revolution changed all that. By the early 19th century, cheaper printing processes and low postal rates revolutionised Valentines day, allowing everybody to send anonymous Valentines day flowers, Valentines day gifts, Valentines day bouquets or Valentines day cards to those they admired.
